The following is a quote from the award description:
"Stonehedge's development plan included the goal of preserving and avoiding any impact to the fen wetland complex. As a result of the efforts of the developer and engineers,
a rare highly valued wetland complex was protected, land dedicated to the public will be available for monitoring, research and preservation, existing erosion and wetland degradation from the existing row crop farmland will be stabilized, and infiltration and ground water recharge
supplying the fen complex will be increased. A rare plant community will be protected, and ground water nutrient removal enhanced, resulting in a unique neighborhood combining the protection
of a rare landscape, interconnected open spaces and a diverse residential community."
Today, the Stonehedge Calcareous Fen can be enjoyed by residents and the general public by using the extensive 6-mile trail system throughout the 150 acres of natural areas in the Stonehedge neighborhood.
